P&A proposal Koh Samui

31 December 2024

P&A’s proposal in Koh Samui was planned as part of a romantic couple photoshoot, allowing the surprise to happen naturally without turning the evening into a staged event.

We started the session at Kimpton Kitalay Samui, where the couple were staying, photographed around the hotel grounds and along the beach, and then travelled to the sunset side of Koh Samui for the final part of the evening. A small beach picnic became the setting for the proposal just as the sun was going down.

A Romantic Photoshoot That Became a Surprise Proposal

One of the easiest ways to keep a marriage proposal genuinely surprising is to make the photography feel like part of another plan. For P&A, the evening began simply as a romantic photoshoot in Koh Samui.

Because the camera was already there from the beginning, there was no sudden change in atmosphere before the proposal. We could photograph the couple naturally, move between locations and gradually build the story without giving away what was going to happen later.

Starting the Photoshoot at Kimpton Kitalay Samui

We began at Kimpton Kitalay Samui, where the couple were staying. The first part of the session was relaxed: walking around the resort, photographing around the hotel grounds and spending some time on the beach.

Starting at the hotel also gave the couple time to become comfortable in front of the camera before the most important part of the evening. Instead of immediately arriving at a proposal setup, the session developed naturally from casual couple portraits into something much more personal.

Travelling to the Sunset Side of Koh Samui

After the first part of the photoshoot, we left the hotel and travelled to the western side of Koh Samui. This part of the island is especially beautiful in the late afternoon because it gives us the possibility of photographing the couple with the sun setting over the sea.

The change of location also created a natural transition in the story. The beginning of the session felt relaxed and exploratory, while the second location became quieter, warmer and more intimate as sunset approached.

A Beach Picnic and the Proposal at Sunset

The final part of the evening was a small picnic on the beach. While the couple were enjoying the sunset, the proposal happened naturally within the photoshoot.

Because we had already been photographing together for some time, there was no need to suddenly change the way we were working. The moment could unfold without interruption, while we captured the reaction and the atmosphere of the proposal as it happened.

Afterwards, the photoshoot continued as an engagement session, giving us time to create portraits of the newly engaged couple in the last light of the evening.

Planning a Proposal During a Photoshoot in Koh Samui

A romantic photoshoot can be a very practical way to plan a surprise proposal in Koh Samui. The photography already has a natural reason to be there, the couple can visit more than one location, and the proposal can be timed for the best light rather than happening immediately at the beginning of the session.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where did P&A’s proposal take place?

The photoshoot began at Kimpton Kitalay Samui and continued on the sunset side of Koh Samui, where the proposal took place during a small beach picnic.

Can a proposal be organised during a normal couple photoshoot?

Yes. A romantic couple photoshoot is one of the easiest ways to keep a proposal discreet because the photographer already has a natural reason to be present.

Can we use more than one location?

Yes. P&A started their session at their hotel and later travelled to another part of Koh Samui for sunset. Using several locations can give the photoshoot more variety and help time the proposal for the best light.

Is the sunset side of Koh Samui good for proposals?

Yes. The western side of Koh Samui can be especially beautiful in the late afternoon because the sun sets over the sea, creating warm light and a romantic atmosphere.

What happens after the proposal?

After the proposal, the session can continue as an engagement photoshoot. This gives the couple time to enjoy the moment while we create relaxed portraits in the remaining sunset light.

Can Thomas Kart Studio help plan the timing and location?

Yes. We can help choose the location and timing based on the type of proposal, sunset, travel time and the atmosphere you would like for the photographs.
